Driving Across the Country

My husband and I over the years have taken many trips going just about ways possible from flying, train, bus, with a group, with family and by ourselves but the trip we remember most was when we drove across country.  We remember more stops and excursions on this particular trip than all the rest put together. We started our trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan and drove to Laredo, Texas making many stops along the way. The year was 1982 and the month was August, which was a very hot month. We were very careful on how we loaded our vehicle, which was a Chevrolet Impala roomy enough with space to spare. We took one suit case each, along with a box with items like paper plates, cups, plastic ware, cast iron fry pan, cooker, and coffee pot. The old fashion coffee pot made to be set on a campers stove which we brought that with us as well. We brought a cooler full of ice and filled with water, soft drinks and tea (no alcoholic beverages).  We made sure to bring a sweater and an umbrella in case we were caught in the rain or chilly weather. We had two maps, road atlas, emergency kit, flares, heavy blanket, and pillows. We were ready to “see the USA in our Chevrolet.”

My husband had not taken a month off from work since we were first married actually we had not had a vacation in several years and this was an adventure that we had often spoke about but never had the time to try. This was one of the best trips that we ever made it was full of interesting things to see, adventures and exciting places to explore. We went through the Olentangy Caverns in Ohio, across the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee, and across the Mississippi River. We drove on and on seeing the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tenn. and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. We enjoyed zoos, parks, out door amphitheaters and guided tours in museums. When we finally arrived in the state of Texas, our first stop was in Austin where the show Austin City Limits aired every Saturday evening. My husband’s oldest sister also lived in Austin, which gave us a bit of a break from driving and being on the road. We enjoyed staying at different motels along the way trying out foods from different parts of the country was a wonderful experience. My husband got his first taste of grits made at the Holiday Inn in Kentucky restaurant.  I enjoyed eating Mexican foods prepared by the Hispanics according to there culture. We had delicious Polish foods, German foods, Italian foods and Greek foods as we traveled.

We finally made it to Laredo, Texas where my husband was born and his father was buried a dream that he had to return some day and revisit his past. He had left Texas when he was nine years old after his father had died his mother moved north with the family to better there way of life. After we found his aunt a sister to his father, she showed him the grave of his father. Then we took a tour-guided trip offered by a travel agency into Nuevo Laredo across the border into Mexico. This lasted a day and it was filled with fun and exciting things. After that, we had to once again get in our Chevy and start for home. We had taken our time to get there stopping at many points of interest and staying at motels along the way with the idea we would be driving straight home without so many stops but we could not pass up more adventures still making stops along the way.  If you are thinking about taking a trip this summer, try driving across country for the fun trip of your life.
