LA 2008: 2010 Mustang officially unveiled LIVE

The doors have yet to open to the LA Auto Show, but that doesn't mean the unveilings haven't started. Last night Ford rented out a hangar at the Santa Monica airport and invited dozens of Mustang club members to come out for the 2010 Mustang's official introduction. For those of us that didn't get a peek at the car earlier in Detroit, this was our first time seeing the car in person. The event started out with a car show featuring all 45 years of the Mustang. Ford even arranged to have a Mustang from every year since 1964 in attendance. Each was lined up in order, starting with a stunning 1964 1/2 red convertible and ending with a 2009 Mustang GT. Perhaps our favorite part was walking behind the early cars to see how the Mustang logo had evolved over the years. Owners also brought out nearly every type of Mustang, from Saleen to Roush to Shelby. Seeing all the beautiful cars and the loyal owners, it's no wonder that the Mustang has had such success over the years.

After the car show it was time to head inside for the unveiling. While a few of us have already seen the car in person and we've all seen the photos, there was still excitement for what would happen next. Ford had several historically-significant Mustang racecars on display, from Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am car to John Force's Mustang funny car. Fittingly, many of the drivers were in attendance as well, and greeted the crowds one by one. Carroll Shelby arrived last, with the crowd erupting in cheers.

Read on for more from last night's unveiling and check out plenty of high-res pictures in the galleries below and full details on the 2010 Ford Mustang are in the press release after the jump.

Cadillac VSR: Future Of Hot Rod

Some say this is the only car a true piston head must own. Open wheels, low, and most definitely not slow, the Cadillac VSR Hot Rod is just a concept now but there are plenty of hearts waiting for its production. Its power comes from a 6.0 liter V8 producing a colossal 400 hp. That’s massive, considering the fact that the car has no roof and two seats. The car closely resembles the Plymouth Prowler but Cadillac insists that their version will run circles around the aforementioned hot rod. Cross your fingers and pray that Cadillac doesn’t close shop just yet, or not until they put out the VSR.

The Yay-Hoo Cup

The H.A.M.B. Drags actually started with a cup. See, I was down and out… burnt up… tired of running this joint… tired of this… tired of that… And then, I went to the first Lonestar Round Up and was completely and totally inspired by the Kontinental Car Club and the fellas that ran the show. I went back home (at the time, Kansas City) renewed with energy and ready to do something above and beyond.

The H.A.M.B. Drags were born and as a nod to my buddies in Austin, I named the “Best of Race” trophy the Kontinental Cup. Every year, the fellas in the Kontinentals pick the car that they thought best represented the idea of the H.A.M.B. Drags. It’s not always the fastest car, but it’s typically the guy that just doesn’t lift - no matter what!

In any case, another club from Austin just announced that they are going to give their own cup this year. The Yay-Hoos will be taking submissions for a “fastest street car” competition. The rules are simple:

1. You will have to drive/live at least 100 miles from the track. This is for real street cars!

2. The Yay-Hoos reserve the right to give the trophy to whoever they choose – no whining allowed.

3. The trophy stays with the Yay-Hoos and your handle/real name/time is put on it. They will bring it back every year to present it to a new winner whose name will go on the Cup, a la the Stanley Cup.

To get involved in the “race within a race,” just find the Yay-Hoo tent at the track and get yourself registered for the competition. They want everybody involved… even if you expect slow time slips. It’s all for fun.

Questions? Ask away - I’m sure your local Yay-Hoo will be quick to answer.

Honda Pays Tribute to One if its Own with the S2000 CR

Despite Honda’s popularity, owner loyalty, reliability, and tuner fame, it is a rare rare occasion for me dole any kind words about the Japanese auto maker. It is not that hold any grudge against them, but more an apathy with their design and utility. Growing up on Horsepower and American Muscle Cars an Asian Rice Burner is just a bitter bowl of Sake to swallow. However, when you read about a company paying tribute to one of their best R&D Engineers by producing his last labor of love with the company; you just have to respect that.

honda 2008 s2000 cr

The 2000 Honda S2000 CR is a clean track car that can also pull off the track and onto the street. It was designed by R&D Chief Engineer Shigeru Uehara, who gave Honda its start in performance design with the Acura NSX, Integra-R and the original S2000.

2008 HONDA S2000 CR

The S2000 CR version of this Honda retains the basic shape and powerplant of the baseline S2000. The changes to the CR version are in the ground effects and in the suspension. Changes whose net results when tested proved to be a 2 second decrease in track lap times. Though a stiffer suspension on the street might be a dreaded miscalculation for the S2000, it is a welcomed component to a finely tuned track car.

2008 honda s2000 cr

With its bold wing and agile reflexes the S2000 CR is a fine tribute to an honorable career. Although Honda will only produce 2000 of these they have already divulged that at a sale price of around $40,000 the company will be eating a loss on the car. Can anyone else name a major automaker that would willing take a loss to honor a most respected contributor?

Andy Weighs In On Women On Top Gear

As you may or may not have heard, there are currently some controversial laws being implemented in the UK:

State-funded organisations are being ordered to boost the proportion of female, black and gay staff to reflect the make-up of the UK population under plans unveiled by Labour’s deputy leader Harriet Harman.

This could potentially mean that Top Gear would have to introduce a female host as the law doesn’t have an exclusion for broadcasters. Top Gear’s executive producer Andy Wilman wrote his opinions about that particular potential change in a recent blog post:

I also do believe that this sort of claptrap is very patronising to women, because it assumes women can’t enjoy a show’s presenters on merit, but can only appreciate a programme if spoken to by one of their own sex.

His post in full is worth a read.

LA 2008: Mercury debuts 2010 Milan

Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Mercury Milan

We'll spare you from going over the laundry list of changes for the new 2010 Mercury Milan since you've already read about them in the post above on the 2010 Ford Fusion. Both cars share a lot in common, so instead we'll tell you what's different between them. The 2010 Milan gets its own redesign that includes new front and rear fascias, which we see as big improvements over the current model that further separates, at least visually, the Mercury from its Blue Oval brother. The Milan also only gets two gas engine options compared to the Fusion's three. Buyers can order up the new 2.5L four-cylinder that produces 175 hp or the upgraded 3.0L V6 that makes 240 horsepower. Unfortunately, Ford's 3.5L V6 producing 265 horsepower is reserved exclusively for the Fusion Sport. There's also the new Milan Hybrid, which again is identical to the Fusion Hybrid in all but its looks and can drive up to 47 mph on all-electric power. Follow the jump for Mercury's official press release and peruse the gallery of high-res images in the gallery below. If you want our deeper analysis of the changes, check out our full post on the new Fusion.

The $20 fill up that changes everything

How low will they go?

Something incredible is happening.

Not long ago, in this very space, I said: “Americans could very easily get used to 3 dollar gas.” Well. Silly me. I would have never guessed that within a month I’d see 2 dollar gas!

I live in a state with relatively high gas taxes, and my local station is selling regular unleaded for about $2.25. That’s incredible, considering last summer that same station was selling fuel for $4.25. I could very easily spend my time here delving into the reasons for such a dramatic drop, but that’s not nearly as exciting as thinking about the consequences of the price drop.

The little Suzuki I drive has an 11 gallon gas tank and was costing just over $40 to fill up, which for such a small car was quickly becoming infuriating. I was ready to trade it in for a Vespa and seriously adjust my driving habits even with that. I was prepared to do whatever I had to so America could cut it’s use of foreign oil and usher in the era of hydrogen to power the next generation of cars.

Then I watched prices on the digital sign at my local gas station plummet, and I filled up Friday night for just over $20. It’s the 20 dollar fill up that is changing my outlook on our country’s gas situation.

Now I’m considering trading in my Suzuki again… only this time a Tundra sounds kind of attractive. Or maybe the practicality of a Pilot. Heck, if I can fill one of those up for 40 or 50 bucks, I’ll be one happy consumer of oil; wherever in the world it comes from.

How low will prices go before they are no longer an issue?
