2010 Ford Mustang Unofficially Revealed? Nope. [2010 Ford Mustang]

The above rendering (and rear shot below the jump) have beeen making the rounds on the interwebs overnight, purportedly press shots of the new 2010 Ford Mustang. While they look pretty close, they're actually renderings commissioned by MyAutomovil.com and not leaked press photos. Sorry folks, you'll have to endure through more of Ford's teasing strip show to continue before the official unveil of the 2010 Mustang next month at the LA Auto Show. Or you can just check out our galleries of the new 'stang in camouflage colors or rendered un-speculatively below.

LA 2008: 2010 Mustang officially unveiled LIVE

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Mustang live unveiling

The doors have yet to open to the LA Auto Show, but that doesn't mean the unveilings haven't started. Last night Ford rented out a hangar at the Santa Monica airport and invited dozens of Mustang club members to come out for the 2010 Mustang's official introduction. For those of us that didn't get a peek at the car earlier in Detroit, this was our first time seeing the car in person. The event started out with a car show featuring all 45 years of the Mustang. Ford even arranged to have a Mustang from every year since 1964 in attendance. Each was lined up in order, starting with a stunning 1964 1/2 red convertible and ending with a 2009 Mustang GT. Perhaps our favorite part was walking behind the early cars to see how the Mustang logo had evolved over the years. Owners also brought out nearly every type of Mustang, from Saleen to Roush to Shelby. Seeing all the beautiful cars and the loyal owners, it's no wonder that the Mustang has had such success over the years.

After the car show it was time to head inside for the unveiling. While a few of us have already seen the car in person and we've all seen the photos, there was still excitement for what would happen next. Ford had several historically-significant Mustang racecars on display, from Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am car to John Force's Mustang funny car. Fittingly, many of the drivers were in attendance as well, and greeted the crowds one by one. Carroll Shelby arrived last, with the crowd erupting in cheers.

Read on for more from last night's unveiling and check out plenty of high-res pictures in the galleries below and full details on the 2010 Ford Mustang are in the press release after the jump.

Kirk Kerkorian May Lose $670 Million On Ford Gamble [He Must Be Super Lucky At Love]

We wondered if Kirk Kerkorian wasn't just a little mad when he bought a 5.5% stake in Ford after selling his GM stock and unsuccessfully attempting to buy Chrysler. News that he's now bailing on his investment has some estimating that Kerkorian, who owns the primary stake in MGM Grand, lost upwards of $670 million on his gamble. The math below the jump.

Kerkorian's company, Tracinda Corp., added approximately 141 million shares of Ford between April and June of this year at an estimated cost of approximately $1 billion. This was when sales were bad. Now car sales are worse and the economy, obviously, is in the crapper. Kirk has already unloaded a little more than 7 million shares at a price of $2.43 per share (average), or about $18 million. As of this writing Ford is trading at $2.17 per share. Assuming it sells at that rate, the total value of the remaining stocks equals about $291 million. Add in the $18 million from the recent selloff and you're looking at a $1 billion purchase now worth $319 million. Even if he can sell the rest of the stock at $2.43 a share (he probably can't) there is still a loss of over half-a-billion dollars. To make matters worse for KirkKerk, he apparently used some of his casino business and other holdings as collateral for the credit to invest in Ford.

This makes us wonder if betting on Ford wasn't more like Russian Roulette than Blackjack. [Portfolio]

Ford Tweaks Six-Speed Transmission for 3.5L Fuel Efficient engine

Ford introduces its 3.5 EcoBoost V6 engine this spring. This environmentally-friendly is coupled by a six-speed 6F-55 SelectShift automatic transmission that’s been configured to meet higher torque demands of the new twin-turbo direct fuel injection engine.

Both technologies will be available in Ford’s 2010 Lincoln MKS (see pic!). The 6F-55 transmission was developed from the successful blueprint of Ford’s 6F-50 transmission. Compared to the 6F-50 transmission, however, the 6F-55 is bulked up and strengthened to work with the EcoBoost V6’s architecture.

All changes were geared towards improved power and fuel efficiency. The modifications included friction material grooves that break up fluid flow and reduce clutch drag losses; nine wave CBLR; improved calibration measures; and a 15-degree-increase of start-to-open temperatures.

The torque of this transmission was also altered to improve the vehicle’s drivability. Together, the EcoBoost V6 and the 6F-55 automatic transmission are pegged to produce 355 horse power and 475 Nm of torque. Ford brags that this translates to higher power and better fuel-economy compared the V8 engine of Lexus GS460 and Infiniti M45.

Ford projects that both technologies will dominate their sustainability strategy for years to come. They’ve targeted that by the end of 2012, nearly all of Ford’s transmissions in North America will be converted to advanced six-speed gearboxes. Ford marks up 2013 as the year when nearly 90% of Ford’s North American vehicles will nestle EcoBoost engines.

The 6F-55 was produced at the Van Dyke Transmission Plant based in Sterling Heights, Michigan. This Ford Plant also produced the 6F-50 and 6F-35 transmissions. The plant is recognized as one of the Ford Centers of Excellence for six-speed transmissions.

So, we have a the F-150 as the "Truck of Texas" but apparently its not ...

Considering the tremendous capabilities and competency displayed by the 2009 Ford F-150, it's anything but a surprise the truck has been awarded the Truck of Texas title by the Texas Auto Writers Association, making it the sixth year in a row Ford has owned those bragging rights. It was a good year for Ford and no doubt, cost-responsible champagne will be flowing. However, we're definitely confused by this next part. Apparently TAWA also awarded the 2009 Dodge Ram "Full-size Truck of Texas," something which seems to directly contradict the idea of awarding the F-150 the "Truck of Texas."

The "Truck of Texas" award is given at the end of a juried voting process following an event lovingly referred to as the the Texas Truck Rodeo. Ford also took home awards for "Truck-Line of Texas," "Best SUV of Texas" with the Expedition King Ranch (which we didn't even know existed), and "CUV of Texas," (apparently a fairly new category) with the Ford Flex. But that's where things stop making sense.

Considering the F-150 is, you know, full-size and all, we're still confused with how Dodge towed away the full-size award. Then, just to pour gas on the conflagration of bragging rights confusion, the Dodge RamBox was awarded "Outstanding Truck Feature." So, we have a the F-150 as the "Truck of Texas" but apparently its not full-sized enough to be awarded the "Full-size Truck of Texas," nor does it have the best feature, both awards going to the Ram. Right. They sure do things strange down there in Texas, don't they? [Detroit Free Press]
